Titles of your book and why they matter

So you wrote a book. Did you think long and hard about the title? The title you picked is going to be with you and your book for a long time. That title along with the blurb of your book and its cover, may decide whether the reader decides to buy and read your book.
Would readers have read 'Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen if it was called Mr.Darcy?
Would readers have read 'Little Women' by Louisa May Alcott if it was called Orchard House?
Maybe to both questions but would their titles have as much impact. You spent all that time writing the book so spend some time thinking of a title that the reader will like and how it applies to the story in your book.Remember though not everyone will like your title, but as long as a few people do its a good title.
Just to back up this argument more consider movie titles a lot of thought goes into them because a bad title can mean movie viewers won't come and see their movie. So think about that title and if you get really stuck run a contest and/or  get some help from your fellow authors who can help.

  1. How about 'Titanic' renamed as 'A funny thing happened on the way to the ocean bottom' - no - maybe not.

  2. Titles really do matter. Also, you don't want to use a title that's been overused before. It makes the book hard to find.

  3. Very nice. I wonder if short vs. long titles make a huge difference. Personally I like short titles. In fact, if you can capture someone's imagination with a one-word title, good for you ... IMHO.

  4. yes they do matter LM and yes I've noted that there are afew too amny of the same title that get routed to all the same pile making the title hard to find.

Short titles do fit on the book easier sometimes but it all depends on how it relates to the book. I don't think google or looking to see how many books might have that same title hurts either.
